My opinion of Palazzo Strozzi: is it a good visit?

Yes and no. I have mixed feelings.

Palazzo Strozzi is undeniably a place steeped in history. As soon as you step inside, you can’t help but be impressed by the interior architecture. As such, for lovers of history and architecture, the visit is already justified.

As I’ve said many times before on this blog, I’m not much of an art lover. I can appreciate a beautiful painting or an impressive sculpture, but I don’t really know anything about it. So my visit to the various exhibitions in the palace was a bit of a mixed bag.

I enjoyed the visit, without loving it. But I imagine an art lover must adore this place!

There’s an interesting collection of classical art, with pieces that make you understand why Florence is the home of the Renaissance. I was able to appreciate the nuances, details and emotion conveyed by these works, even as a non-expert.

However, the part of the collection dedicated to contemporary art didn’t really appeal to me. Installations, recorded performances, conceptual works… It’s a world I understand less, and one that touches me less. But that’s just my opinion. I imagine that for a contemporary art lover, this part of the collection would be fascinating.

I visited Palazzo Strozzi at the end of June and it was very crowded. This was one aspect that detracted from my experience. The crowded rooms, the noise, the impossibility of appreciating a work in peace and quiet… If you can, I’d advise you to choose a quieter time for your visit, or to come at the opening.

What else can you do near Palazzo Strozzi?

In addition to the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence is full of wonders to explore:

  • Florence’s Duomo
  • The Ponte Vecchio
  • The Galleria degli Uffizi.
  • The Boboli Garden
  • The Bargello sculptures
